When your child is first born, you have the luxury of being able to create a nursery or play room that works with the rest of your home in terms of design, layout and colour. As they get older, it’s likely that your child will want to have a bigger say on how their playroom looks.
Creating a playroom or nursery room with a theme is one of the best ways to impress your little one, giving them a room that is truly unique and makes them the envy of their friends. If you want to transport your young child back to medieval times or perhaps they’re just a fan of castlecore, then here are some tips for creating a medieval-inspired playroom.
Wall Decor
The first place to start is your walls. There are some super-realistic, mural-style wallpapers that will help send your child’s room back to medieval times. Similarly, you can use wallpaper to create faux stone walls, which will give the feeling that your child’s room is the inside of a medieval castle. You can also add decorative touches in the form of coats of arms, swords and fake windows.
Furniture
You’ll probably want to add furniture that is comfier than what was used back in the 10th century, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look the same. Try shopping for vintage furniture that has a rustic look. If you are styling a nursery for a younger child, you may be able to find a medieval-themed crib along with other nursery room accessories.
Lighting
A vintage ceiling pendant or chandelier is the perfect way to bring light into the room while continuing the medieval theme. Try searching for brass chandeliers or castle-style lighting to see if you can find something to your taste.
Back in the medieval days, people would’ve also relied on candles as a source of light. While this may be a little too dangerous to add to your child’s playroom, you should be able to source some candle-shaped fairy lights that will work just as well.
Bedding
If it’s a bedroom you’re designing for your child, you can also get creative with your bedding choice. There’s a good chance that your child will want to have their input, but there’s also a good chance they’ll be impressed by anything relating to dragons, knights and mythical creatures.
You could also use similar materials to what would have been used in the medieval times. Fur blankets would have been seen as a luxury and can help to bring through a sense of ancient elegance.
Flooring
Just like your walls, you can create a faux floor by making wise design choices. Chequerboard vinyl flooring will give you an authentic, medieval look, while rugs provide a softer cushioning for your child.
Obviously, a stone floor would give you the most authentic look but your child won’t thank you for that! Instead, a stone coloured carpet will create the same appearance while being considerably more practical.
Artwork
You will be spoilt for choice when looking for castle-themed artwork online, so you should be able to find something that works for your child’s age and interests. If you want to put in extra effort for them, look into having some personalised artwork made.
This could come in the form of a medieval-themed portrait or their very own custom coat of arms.
Accessories
The final thing to add is accessories. There’s no point in creating the perfect-looking playroom if your child doesn’t enjoy what’s inside of it. You may want to accessorise the bed so it can be easily transformed into a den or add toy swords and shields to the room so your child can take part in make-believe battles.
And what child doesn’t love dressing up? Make sure there are plenty of medieval outfits to help them get into character. You could even add a child-friendly archery set so they can work on their skills as a medieval archer.
Younger children may also appreciate soft toys, which you could add in the form of dragons, mermaids and giants. Finally, try to find some books that work with your medieval theme so there’s room to turn your new room into an educational hive.
Whether you are creating a playroom, nursery, or bedroom, hopefully, you are now full of medieval inspiration to go off and create your child’s dream room. If you do attempt to create a medieval-themed room, be sure to send us some pictures and let us know how it turns out.
