Review: This book is full of emotion – the heart aching kind.
For starters, it’s about an eighteen-year-old girl who has just died on her birthday. Not exactly the happiest of books and what’s worse is that this girl dies and then can do nothing about the things that she later learns. Of course, this all leads to the plot for getting her to let go and move on. This is obviously going to be a sad book because even before reading it you know that there is going to be drama, tears and ‘unforeseen’ things.
I put unforeseen in quotation marks because it is obvious that things aren’t going to be right. However, they weren’t that predictable, as although I knew something was going to happen, I couldn’t pinpoint the exact thing. So it did at least have some mystery.
The book is well written – you get a clear visual of the characters from beginning to end and a front row seat as you watch the mystery unfold before them. I quite like books that are like this, I hate it when you go backwards and forwards. But ‘Between’ was nothing like that. It flowed and it made sense. It really is a good book for having things that progress nicely.
So the reason to why this didn’t get 5 stars from me is because Liz (the main character), just made me cringe so much whilst reading through the book and I struggled to see her as a real person. I mean that’s not to say that there aren’t people like her in the world, but I just didn’t enjoy the type of person that she was being described as.
Her character did feel necessary to the plot, but she still was a frustrating character because at times I was just there like ‘why did she do that?’
I did find that the pace lagged a bit in the middle, but the ending made up for that. Even though at the end I did have a little inkling as to what the mystery was before it was revealed, but like I said it was only an inkling – so at least I didn’t know straight away.
It is worth a read, as I feel like this is an actually good read. It’s definitely something which is a little different to what I normally read and even then if you like ghost stories this is perfect.
