Review: Well, I enjoyed reading this book at least. But I felt a bit underwhelmed concerning the whole mystery that surrounds Beth Cullen.
What I did really like about this book, is that it’s not the typical teen vampire book. Yes, it is a ‘supernatural’ book, but it’s something which is a little different. Even though I am a bit older than the target audience I still found this book entertaining and I did want to keep reading it till the end. You can read this book very quickly because it’s well written and engaging.
My main problem with this book is that there is too much detail. Everything that Jackie does is described (in length) and sometimes it just feels a bit unnecessary. I can understand why it was done and that is because the author wanted to make Jackie a likable character – which she is. But there just needs to be less written about her and what she does because you can still have a character develop in the book without every inch of her life described.
I liked Jackie though. She’s clearly conscious of everything that is surrounding her and considering how she is only fifteen, I felt that she appeared quite mature for her age. Admittedly, she does seem a little boy crazy but I didn’t really mind, as romance wasn’t the main part of the story. It was there, just in the background.
I also loved the relationship between Jackie and Colin. It’s great that Colin is gay and that it isn’t made out to be such a big deal. I have to admit Colin did become one of my favourite characters in this book. He’s smart, funny and sweet – he just had this way about him that made him extremely likable.
Angel Kiss follows a steady pace for most of the page count, with clues and revelations presented in small doses. It builds to a good concluding chapter, where everything all falls into place.
I loved the musical element that played a small part in this book. It wasn’t a huge part but it certainly gave this book a little bit extra to think about when I was reading through it.
The supernatural element is cleverly handled, giving the right amount of spookiness and intrigue. It’s not so scary that you won’t be able to sleep at night but there was definitely and unnatural element there.
If you want an easy book that is a little different, I say that you should definitely give this book a go.
