About: Bullied as a teen for being overweight, Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) shows up to his high school reunion looking fit and muscular. While there, he finds Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart), a fast-talking accountant who misses his glory days as a popular athlete. Stone is now a lethal CIA agent who needs Calvin’s number skills to help him save the compromised U.S. spy satellite system. Together, the former classmates encounter shootouts, espionage and double-crosses while trying to prevent worldwide chaos.
Review: I found this film really funny.
Admittedly I was watching it at 3 in the morning last night – and the only thing that I was really worried about was that my flatmates would get freaked out because I was laughing so much.
When I first saw the trailer for this film, I thought it was going to be another ok-ish comedy with nothing much going on about it. BUT the actual story in this film is quite clever and the comedy that is presented in it is rather funny in some scenes.
Prepare to be surprised though, as this film is certainly one that went way over my expextations of it – which makes it even better really.
The actors are complete opposites to one another – you have Dwayne Johnson, or more famously known as ‘The Rock’ and then there’s Kevin Hart, who is tiny in size (although so would any normal person when compared to Dwayne Johnson). However, even though they differ in size, the humour that comes from the two of them is perfect. They match each other in their jokes.
The relationship between these two people is quite believable. I mean even at the very start when Calvin helps Bob in the assembly, you can just tell that they’ll get on at least. And what is even better to see is that Calvin is clearly a nice person. It’s only a small part in the film, but when you see everyone laughing at a cruel joke, it’s great to show people that just doing a small act of kindness can really make someone feel better about themselves.
The plot is kind of clever to be fair – although undoubtably obvious. It’s nothing special really, but it does feel like some effort was involved. Although, what does become apparent is that the comedic aspect of the film was the main focus point.
I’m not really complaining to be fair, because this film is all just about having a laugh really. So it’s no wonder that this film had me laughing out loud.
Be prepared though for a slightly predictable film – like I’ve said before, there is nothing really special about it, but it is a surprisingly successful jokey film.
