Ok, so this post is a little different.
Obviously, from the title this is going to be Halloween based – so be prepared for a slightly spooky post. I’ll try my best to give a varied amount of films, for those people who want their night to be filled with terror or only a slight chill.
1. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Ok, so don’t judge me for this one. But this is a classic for me (mainly because I would watch it every Halloween as a child). It’s not that scary, but there is certainly a spooky aspect to it – because you know it involves dead witches trying to kidnap children for a horrible spell. You know, nasty stuff right?
Anyway, this is the perfect Halloween film for kids.
2. Monster House (2006)
When I first saw this in the cinema it freaked me out so much – I must have been about 9/10? I mean come on a house that comes alive – scary right? Anyway, this film holds a little more punch than Hocus Pocus, for those kids who can handle a little scare here and there. Nothing majorly worrying, though.
3. Ghostbusters (1984)
So, not a proper ‘horror’ film, but ghosts are definitely Halloween related. I mean you don’t get a better film than this – you’ve got the humor, you’ve got a bit of romance, add in the dangers of fighting off ghosts and keeping the world safe and you’ve got yourself a pretty decent film.
4. The Addams Family (1991)
Again, this is another child-friendly Halloween film, but this is the last one in this list. This film is just a must anyway – it’s just brilliant. You have the slightly creepy and morbid family, a hand that runs about by itself – you know all kinds of creepy if you really think about it.
I just really like this film at any time of the year – but as it’s Halloween, you should definitely watch it.
5. Scream (1996)
Now for the scarier films.
Scream is obviously a classic. I mean you have the stereotypical cliches that go with horror films – but it works really well with this movie.
If you want jump scares – but not ones that will keep you up at night, then this is the film for you.
6. The Conjuring (2013)
This is honestly a rather creepy film, but it doesn’t go so far as staying with you once the film is over. Then again, you might not want to go outside in the dark after watching this film, depends on how well you keep your wits about you.
It’s got a good story and will definitely keep you on your toes.
7. Insidious (2011)
This is by far one of my favorite horror films to watch because it honestly makes me jump so bad (and I’m normally ok when it comes to horror films).
It’s got a great cast and the director is brilliant in this film – it is very well filmed and the timings of each scene are done perfectly for a full-on horror film, that will most certainly stop you from wanting to go to sleep.
8. The Visit (2015)
When you watch the trailer for this, I feel like it looked a bit underrated. However, there is just something about this film that makes it different.
I mean what could be sweeter than going to spend some time with your grandparents? Well, this film really makes you think otherwise – be prepared to completely change the way you look at things, it’ll make you question everything.
9. The Ring (2002)
The great thing about this film is that once it’s over you are constantly thinking about it for the next week – particularly if you’re phone goes off after you’ve watched the video in this film. You know? I mean, not to scare you or anything but if that happens you could die. . .
I mean this film is good at getting you thinking about what if? It constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat, but be ready to expect a film that is a little different.
10. Evil Dead (2013)
So I put this in for the horror fans, who also appreciate a lot of gore in the films. It’s up to you if you want this remake or the original but I still think it’s a good film at giving you blood and some scary scenes (even if some bits are very unbelievable).
It is a grim film though so don’t watch it if you’re squeamish.

Also as a little added bonus, for this weekend leading up to Halloween, might I also suggest a Harry Potter marathon? Not that you need an excuse to watch it, but why not use the holidays as a nice excuse to watch an extremely good film series.
