Tamworth Castle – Castle Review

Built:  1080s

Location: Holloway, Ladybank, Tamworth B79 7NA

History: Tamworth Castle, a Grade I listed building, is a Norman castle, overlooking the confluence of the River Anker and the River Tame, in the town of Tamworth in Staffordshire, England. Before boundary changes in 1889, however, the castle site was originally on the edge of Warwickshire, while most of the town belonged to Staffordshire.

The site served as a residence of the Mercian kings in Anglo Saxon times, but fell into disuse during the Viking invasions. Refortified by the Normans and later enlarged, the building is today one of the best preserved motte-and-bailey castles in England.

Review: Although the castle is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, it is not something which I would describe as the best experience of my life, nor would I go again unless (like I first stated), I was in the area.

That being said, this castle is the perfect example of a enduring motte-and-bailey fortress, but also shows the changes that have been placed upon it through the years. If you want to get a sense of real changes in history, this is probably a good place to go because it has everything. It works well because you can identify each different period and still get a sense of the history.

Wtih 15 different rooms along with the courtyard and other hidden gems to explore. Each room offers something different and gives you a glimpse into the Castle’s past and how it has changed over the centuries.

There is a lot to do and it is fun. However, I don’t think it is good enough to make a whole day trip for it. If you are in the area and need a place to visit, you’ll definitely have fun here.

And once you are finished exploring this place, there is plenty to do elsewhere, if you want to go for a meal out, or just explore the town. It’s up to you.

This castle is very kid friendly.

There is a safe, outdoor play area for children containing a huge castle and pirate ship. Perfect for those children with a vivid imagination, or just tearing around climbing!

For the people who don’t want to be playing a pirate or a knight, within the castle grounds there is a 9-hole crazy golf course which is perfect for the whole family. You can enjoy your time working through obstacles and getting competitive amongst one another.

The all-weather tennis courts are floodlit and there’s flat green bowling too! Loads of options!

Tamworth Castle promises a brilliant day out for all the family.

So, although this was described as a castle review, there is more to do in this location then just exploring a castle. You can do a load of different things and make the most of your day. Just don’t go travelling for hours to come visit this place. It’s basically a place to go if you’re in the area.
