They are notorious for wild west frontiers, the land of crazy parties, epic surfing, sprawling cities and wild landscapes, so make sure you pack a little black dress for nighttime and a gym crop top and shorts for those hot, sweaty hikes with stunning views.

In this backpacker’s guide to South America, we’ll take you on a journey through some of the most fascinating sites to see on your travels through this incredible part of the world.

Historial Highlights

Machu Picchu, Peru

No backpacker’s trip to South America is complete without a visit to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, nestled at a staggering altitude of 2,430 metres and surrounded by the perfection that is the Adens Mountains. It is a sight you must behold.

It is one of the most famous landmarks in South America. The architecture was built in the 15th century and looks like you can witness the clouds roll in and out, giving a mystical and mysterious feel to this once-functioning monument.

While you visit, you can embark on a hike on the Inca Trail for a challenging and rewarding journey or take the train to witness the awe-inspiring ruins of this ancient wonder.

Museo del Oro, Bogota, Colombia

Discover the fascinating history of South America’s indigenous cultures through an impressive collection of pre-Colombian artefacts at the Museo del Oro in Bogota.

The museum offers an intriguing insight into the craftsmanship and symbolism of the region’s early inhabitants. In addition, it allows you to educate yourself on Colombia’s history and culture, so you are truly able to understand and appreciate it from an outsider’s perspective.

Bogota is renowned for its beautiful colours and bright expressions all over. You can embark on a fun bicycle city tour, a perfect opportunity to enrich yourself with the unique qualities of Bogota and meet some other travellers.

Christ The Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Perhaps the most well-known statue in South America, overlooking the beautiful, lively Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro since 1931. The monuments stretch 98 feet into the sky on top of a mountain summit; they honestly don’t make anything like it anymore and are a must-see.

It incorporates a hike up the mountain, where you can gaze upon the city views and appreciate the purpose of the statue, which was originally proposed by Princess Isabel in 1888, who wanted a declaration of Him to be the true redeemer of mankind as opposed to a monument in honour of freeing the slaves.

Iguazu Falls, Argentina

It is one of the most memorable places to visit in the world and should be on your list if passing through Argentina. The waterfall stands at a height of 269 feet, bordering both Argentina and Brazil and is composed of 275 thundering cascades.

While in Argentina, you can explore the Iguazu National Park’s inland rainforest. You have multiple options for hikes based on how much you’d like to challenge yourself, and you can view multiple views of the stunning falls.

The best part of this outstanding waterfall is arguably the section called “Devils Throat,” and according to local legend, a god planned to marry a beautiful Aborigine girl named Naipi against her will. She escaped by fleeing with her mortal love in a hand-carved canoe on a river. The god was filled with rage and split the river in two, creating the waterfall so the two lovers could be condemned to an eternal waterfall.
