When you think of Dubai, the first things that come to mind are wealth, status and grand architecture that’s modern above everything else. They are not to be flashy and the best of the best resides here. It’s fascinating that when you think of this city the last you tend to think of is visiting Dubai’s historical points.

You will be surprised at how many gems Dubai has to offer that takes you back to the beginning of this man-made city. So we’ve decided to put together some of the best sites for you to visit next time you embark on your journey to the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai’s Old Town

Also known as Dubai Old Dubai or Bur Dubai. It dates back to the 19th century and was originally a port town and trading centre before it grew into the grand wealthy city it is today. It is still full of character with its traditional architecture, narrow streets, wind towers and courtyards you find yourself getting lost in its beauty. This old town is home to many wealthy merchants which of course is expected, they once built coral and gypsum houses which have since recently been restored to their former glory.

You will not be bored when venturing into Bur Dubai. You can enjoy shopping in the vast retail shops, whether you are looking for precious metals at The Glittering Gold Souk, a traditional hijab, a drink in the Arabian tea house or why not embrace the stunning weather with a boat ride or take a walk around Al Bastakiya Quater, the oldest region of this interesting town.

Jumeirah Mosque

The Jumeirah Mosque is considered to be one of the most jaw-droppingly stunning mosques in the whole of the United Arab Emirates. It’s a huge point of reference when it comes to examples of Islamic architecture. It is an establishment that welcomes all through its doors, whether you are religious or not. They encourage tourists to experience and bask in its beauty. They find it too wonderful to keep to themselves and I do not blame them.

To ensure that you are being respectful, it is advised that you wear something loose-fitting and clothes that cover both your knees and shoulders at all times. Women are also told to enter wearing a scarf or hijab to cover their heads. Be mindful that taking your shoes off is also non-negotiable.

Souk Madinat Jumeriah

Is a perfect alternative to visit on your travels to Dubai for several reasons. Souk Madinat Jumeirah joins worlds together; one part consists of Middle Eastern shopping extravagance and Arabian culture so you have your choice of window shopping in designers and boutiques but you can also come just for the great food they have to offer. Home to over 24 restaurants, you are spoilt for choice.

While Souk Madinat Jumeirah isn’t filled with a rich history for you to explore, there is culture to be appreciated and a nice little change from the city centre.

Dubai Museum

The main museum in Dubai, built in 1787, is located at Al Fahidi Fort. It is known for being the oldest building in Dubai, which is fascinating in itself. It’s a monument that really shows what life looked like back then. The museum itself was opened to showcase traditional Emirates life in 1971.

It is filled with ancient antiques and handicrafts from a range of countries and continents, like Africa and Asia, through trading. The museum is a must-go visit when you are visiting Dubai and only takes up to 3 hours of your day so why not immerse yourself in the culture and exciting history Dubai’s Museum brings?

Saeed Al Maktoum House

One of the oldest heritage sites in Dubai Saeed Al Maktoum House was built in 1896 by its former ruler, Saeed Al Maktoum and his family. It was, of course, made in the traditional Arabic style and is stunning. It is located in such a perfect spot that you can visit this fine landmark and then head over to the wonder of Dubai Creek.

The house consists of 4 wings so expect to spend at least an hour unlocking the secrets of this magnificent house. If you enjoy taking a picture or two, you are more than welcome, which should be considered a must as you will get to see what life was like for the Saeed Al Maktoum family and also capture the fabulous architecture and artefacts the family loved to collect that date back centuries.

Final Thoughts
