About: Harriet Manners knows a lot of things.
She knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a “jiffy” lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. What she isn’t quite so sure about is why nobody at school seems to like her very much. So when she’s spotted by a top model agent, Harriet grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her Best Friend’s dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of the impossibly handsome supermodel Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.
As Harriet veers from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, she begins to realize that the world of fashion doesn’t seem to like her any more than the real world did.
And as her old life starts to fall apart, the question is: will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?
Review: Geek Girl is another one of those books where you can’t say it’s your favourite even though you really enjoyed it. It was entertaining – it had me laughing out loud and at times it even had me cringing for poor Harriet.
Harriet is quite a funny character, she is very likable and I can see young girls thinking that they are similar to her – which is great. I love reading a book that has the main character as someone who you could see yourself as. She is clumsy, she is smart, she is funny. She’s full of little things that make her an interesting person. She feels real.
The plot, though, is my main real issue with this book. It felt at times either rushed, or it dragged on. I thought the book was well written but I would have liked it to be better. For example, the love interest in the book felt like it had no development at all. All that seemed to happen was that there were two people who came across each other. I would have liked there to be more in this book.
Saying that it was still a FUN book to read. I mean when I read it, I was somewhat bored and it did put me in a very good mood. It’s easy to read, a funny story and I feel like that this is a story which isn’t meant to be taken seriously but rather enjoyed.
I read it in that one sitting and it was the perfect book to read in my free time. I didn’t feel like I had wasted my time and will probably read it again at some point in the future.
