Evolution – Film Review

Title: Evolution

Age: PG

Released: 8th June 2001

Director: Ivan Reitman

Genre: Comedy, Action, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance

Rating: **** (4/5 stars)

About: A comedy that follows the chaos that ensues when a meteor hits the Earth carrying alien life forms that give new meaning to the term “survival of the fittest.” David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, and Julianne Moore are the only people standing between the aliens and world domination... which could be bad news for the Earth.

Review: Again, we have another silly film that is perfect for any occasions.

This film does feel as though it is trying to recreate the film ‘Ghostbusters’. It doesn’t quite match that film’s standard but I still really enjoy watching it.

And let’s face it, it is not a very realistic fun – whether you want to argue that because it was made a long time ago it’s not quite up to date as films now. But I don’t think that really matters. I mean this film is incredibly funny.

My favourite scene must be when Wayne Grey goes ‘Ka ka, ka ka! Kakaaa! Tukki Tukki! Tukki Tukki!’ and then Harry Block goes ‘Wayne, I think we’ve established that “Ka Ka” and “Tukki Tukki” don’t work.’ Those lines always crack me up!

I didn’t find it a very original film as there are clearly some other film elements such as Jurassic Park, Men in Black and Alien (no surprises there). But it was a witty film and quite upbeat.

The actors in this film are perfect. Seann William Scott’s great ingenuous grin is a big plus. He makes this comedy look like all the jokes came naturally and his likeable persona is a kind of signature for the film’s whole style. Let’s not forget about the others though who suited their roles amazingly.

This definitely a film that is meant to be enjoyed and enjoyed without taking it too seriously – I mean just look at the way they defeat the massive alien thing (you’ll know what I mean if you’ve seen it). Firstly, it’s the fact that it’s the two brothers who aren’t considered the smartest people. This is great, as it shows that you should always include people even if you think they are dumber than you because, in the end, they might be the only ones with the solution.
