Review: The only thing that I can say about this book is that I really regret not having read this sooner.
It’s the perfect thriller, that keeps you guessing right till the very end. I could not put it down, right from the first page, I was gripped and I just had to know how it would end.
I feel like the best part of this book is the uncertainty that surrounds it. The characters are terrible because you cannot trust any of them. One moment you think you know what’s happening and then a new piece of information emerges which just completely ruins any thoughts that you previously had.
This book really pulls you in, right from the start you wonder how reliable Rachel is as the narrator of her own life, but then you get introduced to the other characters. Rachel, is at first, shown as the drunk woman, with many problems in her life and you kind of feel sorry for her at the start.
Then you get the feeling that her obsession with ‘Jess and Jason’ (and also her ex-husband), is unhealthy. You go through so many emotions with Rachel – you feel sorry for her, you get annoyed with her and then you feel sorry for her again. It isn’t until you realise how manipulative all the other characters are that you realise the dilemma in this book.
Most importanly, the question of who is the murderer is almost impossible to figure out until the very end. I think that even if you have a vague idea, I doubt anyone was certain right from the very start.
Everything falls into place neatly. There has clearly been a lot of thought been put into this book. It all makes perfect sense at the very end, and I think that if you were to reread this book you would notice all the hints that had been subtle placed throughout.
This is a very clever book that is definitely worth your time.
I also cannot wait to see the film version.
