About: Nick Morton is a soldier of fortune who plunders ancient sites for timeless artifacts and sells them to the highest bidder. When Nick and his partner come under attack in the Middle East, the ensuing battle accidentally unearths Ahmanet, a betrayed Egyptian princess who was entombed under the desert for thousands of years. With her powers constantly evolving, Morton must now stop the resurrected monster as she embarks on a furious rampage through the streets of London.
Review: I was so excited for this film – I mean I loved the previous ‘Mummy’ movies and I know that this is not part of the same franchise but I still could not wait for this film to come out.
I think it kind of fell flat of my expectations though. Which is a shame because like I just said, I was dead excited.
I think the amount of advitising that went into this film really bigged it up. Add in the fact that Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe are in this film, it got me thinking that like wow this film is going to be awesome.
But it was a jumbled mess. Half the time I kept thinking that the mummies were zombies, then of course, you had the introduction that there are other monsters in the world (as this is a monster franchise, and not the mummy franchise — I mean it’s got ‘Dark Universe’ as a company for it, or whatever you want to call it).
Anyway, for those who are a fan of the old ‘Mummy’ franchise, you still get some moments that remind you of that film. You have the sand storm that has the evil mummy’s face in it. Then there’s the gold book that makes a brief entrance as a defensive piece, when it gets slammed into someones face. So it’s not completely different.
I do have to admit that I jumped two times in my seat at the cinema – something which made my dad start laughing. This happened during the creepily dark moments when the mummies jump out.
There is also an attempt at humour in this film but it kind of falls flat, as though someone just picked some random lines that worked well in other films and thought that would be fine for this film. I did chuckle at some, but they’re not even that memorable.
I also have so many questions about this film. Beware, this may spoil it (althought I doubt it).
At the start, it’s not really a question but its just so annoying that the when the airforce comes and blows up that particular section it is perfectly in place for the tombs opening? And then you also have the fact that the guys shooting just up and run away? Also, the fact that Nick and his companion didn’t die when they stuck there head over the wall is suprising. The amount of bullets that were being shot, stragetically speaking means that one must hit a target at somepoint. But whatever, it’s all done for effect right?
Secondly, the explanation for Ahmanet being inside Nick’s head was just not well explained. There was no argument behind his reasoning – not that there was any reasoning.
Lastly, when the crusader mummies help Ahmanet – why? I thought they were fighting against her? I must have missed a detail, but even my dad was confused by that and I always think that my dad is highly intelligent.
Anyway, I did kind of enjoy this film, so I’m not fussed that I brought a student ticket that was only £6 — I say only £6 because if I had saw this in London, it would probably be around £10 and that’s a huge amount in difference. HOWEVER, what I do know is that even though I did like my cinema experience, I probably won’t buy this film till it costs me less than a fiver from Tesco. Sorry.
This is an attempt at a creepy, action film which, unfortunately, has no idea what it quite wants to be.
