Pack Smarter, Travel Better: A Backpacker’s Guide

If you have never backpacked your way through a vacation, you are missing out. Backpacking is a great way to stay physically active while seeing the sites you want to see and many of the ones that most other people miss out on. All you need to make your next backpacking adventure great is a little information, preparation, and planning, and then you are all set.

Find the Perfect Destination

Navigating your way through another country with everything you need on your back is liberating. Doing it in a destination that brings you wonder, and a sense of history and culture, is even better. Look for itineraries and schedules for your dream trip that will help inform you on what to do and what to expect. You do not need to figure it all out for yourself. Instead, take advantage of resources, such as these for the Inca Trail Itinerary

Let someone else do the research for you, so all you need to do is show up. A predetermined and well-thought-out itinerary will help you understand what you will be doing each day and how to pack and dress for the activities. You will not be left in the dark about how long you will be trekking each day or what the rigours of the terrain will involve. It is always helpful to be prepared to ensure you have the best experience possible.

Pack with Intention and Purpose

Knowing what you will be doing each day of your trip with a clear and detailed itinerary will also help you pack what you need and nothing extra. After all, you have to carry what you bring from the beginning of the trip all the way to the end, so you want to make sure you only bring what you will need.

Pack multi-purpose clothing as a priority. Look for items that will work during a long hike and a casual meal. Opt for hiking pants with zip-off legs that are easy to remove and put back on in case the temperature changes. Wear good-quality hiking boots that you have broken in at home before the trip. Also, be sure to pack several pairs of good hiking socks; you will need them. Only bring clothing that is easy to wash and dry. To facilitate that, pack a small bottle of concentrated laundry detergent that is suitable for use in nature without any damaging ingredients.

Focus on What is Around You

In this day and age, everyone wants to post their experiences in real time or shortly thereafter. While that is the culture you are living in, you can take a step back from it when you are on vacation. You can still take photos and videos of what you see, but wait to post them. Not only is this a good idea so that people do not know you are away from home and that your home is unoccupied and unattended, but you will also be able to enjoy the breathtaking world around you and stay in the moment.

Make your next backpacking adventure better with a little extra planning to ensure you have the best experience possible. Find a good itinerary, pack well, and be intentional in your environment.
