Review: My sister actually recommended that I read this book (my sister is twenty-five ok, I only mention this because this book is meant to be considered as a teen fiction book).
I was talking to her about how I just fancied a book which was an easy read, completely different to everyday life and would be finished by the end of the day – this was the perfect book for what I wanted.
I did really enjoy this book, and I really liked the story idea. I wouldn’t say it was that original, as in, I didn’t think it was that different from some books I have read. However, saying that, I don’t think that should really cloud your judgment when reading this book because you can’t get much different from everyday life than a person who has a power that involves fire.
I do have to admit, though, that at some points in the book, I felt like that author didn’t quite know where she wanted the story to go – this is particularly noticeable at the start of the book.
I think it feels like this, though because the author is just trying to get all the information down about the book so that the reader has more understanding of what is actually going on.This is a problem that some fantasy writers have — I say problem but it’s not that big of a deal.Mainly because I really, really loved this book.
I mean fantasy books are just amazing and I feel like you can never go wrong with a fantasy book.What’s also great about this book, is that I was really rooting for the characters.Ruby was just a fireball of energy (yes, this is a pun), but I also couldn’t help but laugh at the irony in her name being Ruby (hello ruby is red, fire is red, coincidence? I think not). Her attitude in life was quite aggressive but I think it was also honest. It never felt like her opinions were forced or that her actions were false because she felt very believable and I could really imagine her as a living person.
I also really loved the relationship between Ruby and Arcus – I don’t care that it’s an obvious story idea to have a person who symbolises fire and a person who symbolises ice get together, I mean opposites attract and in this case they couldn’t be more opposite. But who cares, the two are great together.
The reason I gave this book 4 stars, is basically because of what I mentioned earlier, although I love this book. Elly Blake does make some mistakes in her writing, but as this is her first book published, she did an incredibly good job. Also, it’s clear that her writing improves with time (as I did enjoy the book more after the beginning).
So from this, I look forward to her next book in this series, to which I’m sure her writing style and story ideas will be better and greater than before.Hurry up please because I can’t wait for the next book!
