Review: I’m in two minds about this film.
For starters, it’s a series that I completely love and adore. But when it came to actually watching this film (something which I have been excited for, for months!), I was left disappointed.
Yes, I still gave it 4 stars, but as a standalone film, it just wasn’t up to scratch to get the golden 5 stars.
If this was a Christmas special or something, I probably would have enjoyed it more.
It is because of this reason, that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars.
It’s a shame really because the film was enjoyable and I love the show.
I just feel that as a film there should have been a bit more to it. I’m not sure what though, and I get the impression that there may be more to come. Maybe another film or another series (which I would be totally up for).
I mean it’s still good (well not just good, it’s pretty great), the actors are absolutely wonderful. But it was kind of obvious, a bit too staged. It wasn’t anything new for me.
Overall though, it is a very good watch for anyone who is interested in Downtown Abbey, or anything that relates to the Edwardian times.
It is certainly a heart-warming and feel good film. Perfect for any Saturday night when you just fancy staying in and watching a film.
If you’ve never seen the show before, you can still enjoy this film, as it is very easy to follow. However, you would be a fool not to watch the show (as the show is amazing).
Don’t let my 4 stars put you off. If I could I would probably give it a rating of 4.5 stars, just because it wasn’t quite perfect, but also it’s still a really great film.
It was wonderfully written, directed and performed perfectly.
The casting was absolutely spot on and I mean anything with Maggie Smith in will just be perfect anyway.
This is an absolute classic of a film. It is able to keep you interested through simultaneous story lines of various characters and can produce witty one liners that will make you chuckle throughout.
This is something which has been apparent throughout the show anyway, I mean who can ever forget the season 1 enduring question of “What is a weekend?” courtesy of Violet (Maggie Smith).
There are plenty of lines like this in the film, but I don’t want to spoil it for you.
This is a film that will make you smile by the end of it, so it definitely something you need to watch (if you haven’t already done so).
So grab the popcorn, or whatever your snack of choice is and enjoy!

Me and my mum watched this film, I really enjoyed it to be fair, I think Maggie Smith is a fantastic actress in Downton Abbey. I do hope they make another film or perhaps some more series 😁 x

I confess I was disappointed. I liked the series (up until Matthew’s death), but I think the movie just lacked something that I could not name. Great review 😉

Yes, I totally agree, I really loved the serious until Matthew’s death! I still watched it though and was very excited for this film to come out. But just like you, I found it lacked something even though I can’t quite figure out what.

As someone who has seen only the first couple seasons of Downtown Abbey, I enjoyed watching the film. But, even though it is a stand-alone, I felt a little bit empty and feel like the script writers could have done a better job of making the movie stand on its own two feet.

I completely agree it needed to have a bit more to it. I did enjoy it but felt that it was just another Christmas special and not a stand-alone film. You’re probably right about the scriptwriters, I think they could have done something more to make it better. Thanks for commenting!

My mom and I saw this at EVERYMAN and loved it. It’s not perfect by any means but it definitely stayed true to the show and made me feel all warm and fuzzy by the time it ended. I think there’s going to be a sequel, too 🙂
