Why Mountain Towns Make the Best Digital Detox Trips

There’s this very specific kind of tired that comes from staring at a screen all day. Maybe you know what that exact feeling is. Well, doomscrolling til 3 am has that effect on people, right? Well, there’s that to worry about, and there’s the short attention spans, constant tab hopping, and brain rot is a thing (well, that type of content at least). Oh, and even on trips, phones are still glued to hands. Plus, photos, reels, checking work email “just in case”, scrolling in the hotel bed instead of actually switching off.

Like, it starts to feel like there’s no real off button anymore, just different Wi-Fi passwords. Maybe that sounds harsh, like some people go on a cycling holiday and every break they scroll their phone, every meal they do it, they just watch TV or scroll on TikTok the moment they crash on the hotel bed, you get the idea here.

But you need a screen detox, well, a general digital detox. And no, going to one of those detox resorts isn’t needed (ridiculous marketing anyway), instead, why not a cute little mountain town?

Your Phone Just Matters Less in the Mountains

Well, the wilderness in general. At home, the phone does everything. It’s the clock, alarm, map, weather, entertainment, distraction, all in one. Basically, you reach for it in any tiny pause, and there goes another twenty minutes on apps that weren’t even meant to be opened. You get the picture here. And sure, on some trips it’s no different; it’s everything, it’s probably the biggest travel tool you have.

When it comes to mountain towns, at least, depending on where you are, the signal might be bad, which honestly is a good thing because you’re less inclined to be on your phone. Well, the wilderness in general has that type of effect (just bad signals usually or no nearby cellphone towers at all). Usually, theres are things to do too, like a lot of stuff is usually walking distance, there’s activities like hiking, shopping, dining, etc., so you’re at least more busy and again, less inclined to look at your phone.

You’re Having a Lot of Fun

More specifically here, you’re keeping busy. When it comes to resorts, the whole goal is to rest, hence the temptation to sit and scroll becomes a lot bigger. But if you’re a bit more active, especially out in nature, then you’re less inclined to look at it. Actually, some people find it easier when there’s one “official” thing on the schedule, then everything else stays loose. If you think about it, you’re less likely to look at your agenda/ phone calendar or clock like this.

For example, a couple of mornings built around ski lessons Morzine, maybe some skiing or hiking on the mountain if you’re up for it, followed by afternoons with phones in airplane mode (hopefully) while they read, wander, nap, or just stare at mountains from a balcony (and sometimes hotels will offer things to do as well depending on where you’re staying). But of course, if the wifi connection is awful, and the signal is awful, well, you’ll still just not be on the phone at all.

Try Simple Routines During Your Trip

So, depending on the type of mountain you’re at (like how touristy it is), it could help you with your routine while you’re there (but it might depend on how long you’re there, too). Just think about it, early-ish nights because it is actually dark and quiet (could mean going to sleep earlier) or going to an indoor attraction or thing to do earlier in the evening.

If you’re physically active, you might be inclined to eat a larger breakfast at a more steady time. Plus, time outside in the middle of the day by default, not as a special event squeezed into a calendar. Basically, there’s no real need for anything complex to where you need to “decompress” with your phone while lying on the bed, or couch, or wherever.
