Christmas Film Countdown – 20

It’s so close now guys!

I was wondering though, if along with this film Christmas countdown, if you guys do anything else to make this month special? Like an advent calendar for example?

I’ve only just got my advent calendar today – I mean can you believe it? I’m not really complaining though, because it meant I got more than the one chocolate a day! But now I’m back on track, and limiting myself to the one chocolate a day (at least until Christmas Day, where I fully intend to stuff my face).

Anyway, this time round I thought I’d bring up an old classic. It is considered a Christmas film so please don’t be surprised. . .

About: “Meet Me in St. Louis” is a classic MGM romantic musical comedy that focuses on four sisters (one of whom is the nonpareil Judy Garland) on the cusp of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The film spotlights the sisters’ education in the ways of the world, which includes, but isn’t limited to, learning about life and love, courtesy of the prototypical boy next door. In the end, love — accompanied by song, dance and period costumes, all in glorious Technicolor — conquers all. 

Review: I absolutely adore this film.

It doesn’t get Christmassy till the very end, but you’ll be perfectly entertained up until that point.

You have dance acts, singing scenes and an amazing cast (plus a really cute story line). It’s the perfect film to cozy up to on a cold winter evening.

I don’t think anyone could be disappointed by this film – and please don’t just be like ‘oh it’s old, it won’t be any good’ — it’s a classic, that’s all I’m going to say to the haters.

I mean, the only real problem that I have with this film, is how on earth are you meant to pronounce Louis? In the very beginning, it gets sung over and over again, and you’re like ok I get it now, but by the end, it’s pronounced completely differently!! As a literature student I’m trying to think of some intelligent reason for this, but all I can come up with is that it is either a mistake, or the people in charge were just doing it to please everyone (you know, like how people fight over how a scone is meant to be pronounced, maybe this is just a British thing. . .)

ANYWAY, back to the film. I strongly urge anyone to watch it, if they haven’t already. You’ll fall in love with it, I guarantee (and if you don’t like this film, well . . .  just keep that to youself).

Just to let the message sink in — this is definitely a worthy Christmas film!
